I don't know enough about Arabic television to judge what the reality
show might be like. The only thing I've ever watched is the Lebanese
soap THE STORM RAGES TWICE, which is, like most soaps, hilarious. But
not as hilarious as the Maltese soap called HYPOKRITI which was
performed, designed, produced and catered by one extensive family and
was beyond parody...
It's interesting to see what happens when popular western forms are
picked up and transformed by other cultures. I watched a Hong Kong
gangster movie the other day that totally impressed me: 50s film noir
jammed together with a lot of hugely impressive Chinese fight scenes
and a lot of stuff about face that I know I barely understood,
creating an urban epic, even a poetic, that reached towards the
mythic. And in the end, you got what you never get in Hollywood: an
unashamed embrace of the tragic.
