There are about 61 million people living in the UK; our work affects
them all. At the Office for National Statistics (ONS) we produce crucial
official statistics covering the UK’s economy and society. That’s
everything from the Retail Prices Index and Gross Domestic Product to
the 10-yearly census, the unemployment figures, and data on social
trends, family expenditure, smoking rates... the list is huge.
Our work is vital to government, local and health authorities, industry,
researchers, students and the public. We inform decision making at all
levels with statistics that are official and independent. ONS is the
executive office of the UK Statistics Authority, a non-ministerial
department that reports directly to Parliament. ONS is the UK
Government’s single largest statistical producer.
We currently have a number of opportunities at graduate entry level for
mathematicians, statisticians and people with good problem solving
skills, to join our Methodology Directorate. You will be applying your
knowledge and abilities to problems of national importance and will need
to have or be about to gain at least a 2:2 degree in a numerical or
relevant subject. The roles are very varied and could involve, for
example: developing new survey designs, solving complex estimation
problems, statistical modelling, and small area estimation.
