You will join a growing team of research staff and postgraduates working on third sector issues at Southampton.
In this post you will conduct ethnographic research into sociological and organizational dimensions of a range of Third Sector organizations, working with Professor Susan Halford and Dr Pauline Leonard. The project will explore a range of questions about the nature of work and careers, organizational practice and inter-organizational relations.
You will have a first or good second class degree in a relevant social science discipline together with relevant postgraduate qualification including experience of qualitative methods. You will have experience of conducting literature searches and reviews and the ability to conceptualise and conduct research under your own initiative.

The Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy, www.cgap.org.uk brings together academic expertise from a range of disciplines to develop a research programme that will lead to an improved understanding of charitable giving and the distribution of charitable resources. You will be based at Southampton University, but will work as part of a joint initiative with colleagues at the University of Kent on the theme of charity and social redistribution. Additionally you will be co-located with the Southampton section of the ESRC Third Sector Research Centre, at which there are currently 7 staff in post.
You will conduct qualitative investigations of perceptions of the redistributive impact of charitable activity through case studies of the distribution of charitable resources in a selected set of localities, chosen to reflect the diversity of the charitable sector and the contrasting circumstances facing different communities. Semi-structured interviews and possibly focus groups will explore local perceptions of the match between flows of charitable resources and social need. The post is based at Southampton but extensive travel will be required for research purposes.
