PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) -This is one unusual experiment for Cliff Lee and the
Seattle Mariners. Any major league team, for that matter.
Lee is sidelined with a strained abdomen that could cause him to miss the
first weeks of the season, but the Mariners are using platelet-rich plasma
injection therapy to treat their prized winter acquisition.
The treatment for the 2008 AL Cy Young Award winner has been used for the
last decade mainly on joint issues such as tennis elbow, hamstring strains
or other injuries to limbs.
Not on abdomens. That makes Lee something of a medical experiment.
"I guess you'd have to say that," Mariners medical director Dr. Ed
Khalfayan said Saturday in a telephone interview from his home in the
Seattle area.
Khalfayan gave the 31-year-old left-hander an ultrasound and the
platelet-rich plasma therapy on March 19 in Seattle, injecting Lee's own
blood into the injured area to focus its healing powers on his ailing
midsection

PHILADELPHIA The Philadelphia Phillies, the team reportedly at the front
of the line in the pursuit of Blue Jays pitcher Roy Halladay, have
acquired reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee from the Indians.
The defending World Series champions are sending Cleveland four minor
league prospects for Lee and outfielder Ben Francisco, a baseball official
familiar with the trade told The Associated Press today.
The deal doesn't include top Phillies pitching prospect Kyle Drabek, the
person said on condition of anonymity. The Blue Jays have reportedly
insisted Drabek be included in any trade for Halladay.

Lee gave up two hits and a first-inning run to the Rockies, and then toyed
with them the rest of the afternoon. Lee, 2-0, 1.13 ERA, gave up six hits
and one run in seven innings, permitting just two baserunners to advance
past first base.
"He works fast, showers fast, dresses fast, what more could you want?"
says Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins, who continued his own tear with his
12-game hitting streak, going three for four with a double and triple. "He
has been impressive."
Lee, acquired last week by the Phillies from the Cleveland Indians, has
absolutely dominated the National League. He has given up just 10 hits and
three walks to the 60 batters he has faced, permitting only four
baserunners to reach scoring position.
"They are going to get some hits off him, and some runs," Phillies manager
Charlie Manuel says, "every now and then."
Then again, the solar eclipse appears every now and then, too.
"It is definitely different," Lee says. "Facing the pitcher and the bottom
part of the lineup is a little different over here [in the National
League] compared to over there [the AL]."
