in a Range of Environments:
A Selective Collection of Sources
One important aspect of learning is figuring out what one does not know or
understand, putting this into clearly stated thoughts and words and then
asking people with the ability to understand and answer the questions that
one is posing. While the responder may be using their own skills and
knowledge to mentor the questioner or showing the questioner how and where
to find answers or pertinent information regarding their queries, it is
imperative that the responder has a clear understanding of what the
questioner needs to know. Many students and learners lack skill in this
very task, defining ones information needs, framing these needs into
accurate statements that reflect these needs for knowledge and
understanding and finally finding the people or tools that can provide
good information to meet these needs. In the world of computers, instant
messaging, texting, databases and internet search engines, designing
questions for machines can be as important a skill as designing questions
for human responders in print or verbally. Since reference librarians
have the role of providing answers to questions, it may be useful to list
some of the resources about asking questions that come from the arena of
the reference interview and reference service in libraries. This then is
a selective collection of sources about asking questions aimed at
providing sources that will teach and promote thinking about this
important aspect of learning.

This pamphlet is designed to aid teachers, particularly social studies
teachers, in improving their classroom questioning techniques. An
introductory section notes the importance of effective questioning in the
stimulation of thinking and learning. A technique is suggested by which a
teacher can measure his question-response patterns by tape-recording
classroom discussion and plotting the teacher-student question ratio. A
discussion of the relationship between the teacher's purpose and types of
questions used includes sample questions to illustrate the various
classifications of questions according to the levels of intellectual
behavior they elicit, e.g., Bloom's six levels (knowledge, comprehension,
application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation); Pate and Bremer's
convergent and divergent questions; and Carner's concrete, abstract, and
creative levels of questions. A suggested list of "skeletal questions" is
provided, applicable to various contexts and grade levels, and a list of
"Guidelines for Good Questions" discusses precise wording, appropriate
timing, clarity of purpose, individualization, eliciting student response,
encouraging student questions, exploring incomplete answers, and
stimulating creative thought. "Question-Asking Practices To Avoid" are
also listed. A 17-item annotated bibliography provides selected
