ESRC 1+3, +3 AND UNIVERSITY FUNDED PHD STUDENTSHIPS
IN SOCIAL WORK AND SOCIAL POLICY
* The School of Social Work and Psychology at the University of East Anglia is seeking to
* recruit excellent candidates for ESRC and University fully funded full-time and part-time
* PhD studentships in Social Work and Social Policy, to start in October 2010.

Successful applicants will join an internationally leading academic department with a strong interdisciplinary focus and reputation for policy and practitioner relevant empirical research in social work, social policy, and psychology. The School is home to the Centre for Research on the Child and Family, a Key Institution of UNICEF Childwatch International.
The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) rated 90% of our research to be of international standing with 55% judged to be “world leading” or “internationally excellent”. Social Work at UEA was rated third in the UK in the Independent Newspaper League Table of Universities.
We are seeking to recruit applicants for the following Research Areas and Projects:
Protecting Children
* Serious child maltreatment, family support, interagency working, children on the threshold of out of home care, implications for policy and practice (Dr Marian Brandon).
* Issues and preventive strategies in child sexual exploitation, turning points and survival strategies of women involved in prostitution (Dr Jane Dodsworth).
Improving Child Placement
* (1) Stepparent adoptions: contact and openness in relation to children and their biological fathers. (2) Post-adoption contact: the use of e-mail and social networking sites in children's contact with their birth families. (3) Adoptive parents attitudes about post-adoption contact: the impact of adoption agency preparation (Dr Beth Neil).
* (1) Providing a secure base in the transition to adulthood from residential care. (2) Fostering. (3) Youth offending. (Professor Gillian Schofield).
Fathers and Work-Family Negotiation
* (1) Comparative policy analysis of father-targeted parental leave in Europe. (2) Couple negotiation of maternity and paternity leave. (3) Work-family reconciliation for parents of premature babies. (Professor Margaret O’Brien).
Parenting
* Parental identity of separated mothers and fathers, management and negotiation of parental roles and responsibilities post-divorce, narrative research methodology (Dr Sandra Kielty)
Legal and Professional Issues
* Child care social work and the law, social work and social policy, international dimensions of professional social work, especially child care (Dr Jonathan Dickens).
Four types of studentships are available:
ESRC studentships
* +3 Interdisciplinary ESRC awards (Quota)
* +3 awards (competition) - for candidates with previously ESRC accredited research training.
* 1+3 awards (competition) - for candidates wishing to take our ESRC accredited MA Child and Family Research.
These awards cover tuition fees, a tax-free maintenance grant (currently £13,290 a year) and a research training support grant.
These ESRC awards are only open to UK national and EU nationals who have been resident in the UK for three years prior to starting.
Please check the ESRC webpage to find out if your Masters qualification is accredited by the ESRC for a +3 studentship. Please note that there are various guidelines for degrees obtained before and after 2007.
Fully funded UEA Faculty studentships
* Studentships include tuition fees at Home/EU rates, a tax-free maintenance grant (currently £13,290), and a research training support grant.
For all studentships, there may be opportunities to supplement income with teaching experience.
