And Alison, who is your competitor, will, quite rightly, charge you
handsomely for providing you with the information you need. She has, after
all, invested heavily in developing her company's expertise and products in
the field.
Similarly, over the years, my colleagues and I spent thousands of hours,
paid and unpaid, in retention research both to support our clients and
because we recognised that it went to our credibility as consultants to have
the information to hand and to keep it up to date.
As I've now retired and taken down my RM consulting shingle, it's not self
serving in reiterating a point that's been made in the past. It may be
legitimate for those employed as records managers to ask their colleagues
for information of this kind. Even then there is an argument against the
wholesale sharing of data paid for, in effect, by those colleagues'
employers. As a consultant, however, you're selling your knowledge and
expertise to your clients and it's unreasonable to expect your professional
colleagues to provide that support for free.
