Dear colleagues,
I would like to draw your attention to the opening of a PhD position in the
molecular spectroscopy group at the ISM (Institut of Molecular Sciences),
Bordeaux 1 University (France). The position will be available in autumn 2010
but the application deadline is fixed to the 1st of june 2010.
This PhD thesis will focus on tip and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy to
study nanosystems (original single-walled carbon nanotubes in particular) and
molecular orientation of metalloporphyrin-based thin films. The selected
applicant will participate to the common effort to improve the already
operational experimental setup combining a Raman spectrometer and an
atomic force microscope (AFM). He will optimize experimental conditions (metal
coating of the AFM tip, nanostructured substrate if required, laser wavelength
and power...) in order to perform precise measurements using tip enhanced
Raman spectroscopy (TERS) and evaluate laser-induced enhancement effects,
chirality-related changes... Depending on his/her preferences and skills, the
selected applicant will have the opportunity to invest in the production of
nanostructured substrates, the chemical synthesis of nanoscale materials or
the simulation of their properties.
To purchase equipments and consumables, this PhD will be financially
supported by the French program awarding university/CNRS chairs. The
research grant will be provided by the Bordeaux 1 university in the framework
of its BQR (Bonus Quality Research) program.
The strongly motivated applicants must have a Master degree or a similar
degree. They should have particular skills in at least one of the following
fields: molecular/solid state physics, nanophysics, vibrationnal optical
spectroscopy, chemical synthesis, microfabrication, fluent in English.
To apply for this PhD thesis, please send me a CV and a motivation letter to
the following email address [log in to unmask] One or two
recommendation letters would be appreciated too. For further information
about the position feel free to contact me at [log in to unmask]

Yours sincerely,
Dr Sebastien Bonhommeau,
Assistant professor, Bordeaux 1 university.
