John
I worked on the Roan Antelope Copper Mine (RST) from 1965-1976 - my memories may help.
I will send you (off list) a couple of contacts who were managers/general manger level around that time.
Regards
Tony Brooks

Subject: Zambian Mining in the 1960s - 1970s
I have promised to give a talk on the mining industry in Zambia in the period immediately before and after independence, when I lived there.
The talk is to an Academic group (the British Studies Seminar at the University of Texas), and is supposed to be somewhat personal in nature. However, after 40-odd years I do not trust my memory to recollect all the really significant things and to get the details right. Also, I worked mainly in exploration, although I did some work at Kansanshi, Nkana and Bwana Mkubwa. I had very little contact with the mines of the RST group.
Does anybody on the list have any suggestions for "must-read" books or papers that I should consult? I need to talk about the mines themselves and the politics and social history of the times. I have Parpart's book on Labor and Capital on the African Copperbelt (a very Marxist view), and JA Bancroft's memoir "Mining in Northern Rhodesia", but both of these end before Independence. I also have a ton of "scrapbook" material that I haven't looked at in 40 years!
Any help is good help
John
