***Self-Health’: A Workshop on the New Forms of Patients’ Narratives,
Subjectivities and Ethics in Healthcare*
*18 June 2010, 9am – 4pm*
Room NAB LG03 (New Academic Building)
*London** School** of Economics and Political Science*
This workshop will address questions of the ‘self-help’ or ‘self-health’
movement and its implications for healthcare. By self-help we mean all
the ways in which people find ways to facilitate, take (or avoid)
responsibility, or motivate themselves in regard to their health and/or
illness. For example: diet, exercise, relaxation, joining
societies/clubs, complementary or alternative therapies. In particular
the workshop will approach these issues through considerations of
narrative, subjectivity and ethics (of the self).
The main aim of the workshop is to engender discussion, based on
contemporary empirical research, to draw out important themes, arguments
and possible areas of future research. In order to do this the workshop
will have three distinguishing features.
First, by approaching this field at this time the workshop will be able
to take advantage of a visit to the UK by *Professor Arthur Frank*, from
the University of Calgary, a leading international academic in the field
of narratives, subjectivity and healthcare. Professor Frank will open
the workshop with a seminar on 17 June and will be attending the
workshop the next day. We hope that his involvement will be a starting
point for developing a network of researchers interested in this field
in the UK.
Secondly, the workshop is a return to sociological questions regarding
the self-help and healthcare movement that have been around for some
time. However, what is increasingly apparent is that these are now
occurring in the space between ‘top-down’ approaches to managing health
and the empowered and embodied ‘bottom-up’ patient group initiatives.
The workshop will explore the space between these tensions and map the
new forms of narratives, subjectivity and ethics that are being formed.
Finally, the format of the workshop will provide a rare opportunity for
researchers to discuss at length some of the key issues in this emerging
field. By making the main workshop papers available (on a password
protected website) prior to the event we will provide the opportunity
for a more detailed and considered discussion than is otherwise
available in many workshops or symposiums. Each paper will have a
‘respondent’ allocated prior to the workshop to initiate the
discussion. The workshop will be divided into three sessions focused on
key areas of this field. Each session will involve up to 20 minutes
opening response per paper, followed by 50 minutes of discussion. In
this time those who are attending, but not presenting, will also be able
to contribute their research and ideas to the discussion.
_Call for papers requirements:_
We are therefore would welcome proposals on *self-help in the field of
health and/or illness* on the following topic areas, although they are
not exclusive:
· Wellness, wellbeing or quality of life.
· The role and use of ICTs.
· Coping and managing with (serious) illness or disability.
· Managing uncertainty.
· Embodiment and embodied approaches.
· Decision making.
Abstracts of 350 words and a brief statement outlining the institutional
affiliation of the participants should be sent by _26 April 2010_ to the
workshop organisers via the website
(http://www.lse.ac.uk/collections/BIOS/events/SelfHealth.htm). Please
also note whether you would be happy to attend and respond to a paper,
if your paper is not accepted for discussion.
We expect papers to be submitted by _31 May 2010_, so that we can upload
them to the website. A provisional timetable and programme can be found
on the website.
If you wish to attend the workshop, but not present or respond, please
also sign up via the website.
*All welcome. The workshop is _free_ for all attendees, but pre-booking
is essential.***
