*/Production values: a /**/GERMAN TV INTERNET SURVEY AND THE
MEDIA CONSTRUCTION OF SEXUAL KNOWLEDGE/**

*Abstract:
*
*//**//**//*
In 1968 the journalist and film maker Oswalt Kolle (b.1928)
produced a number of explicit educational movies that addressed
the lack of knowledge around sexualities and sexual health.
Forty years later, a German television company planned a
retrospective series of programmes to identify changes in sexual
mores and attitude using the largest, internet based survey of
sexual values, attitudes and practices undertaken in Germany.
The research development phase revealed cultural differences in
the assumptions underpinning the conduct of social research in
two 'close' European countries. A second more subtle paradox was
revealed in the media drive for a reductive, essentialist,
scientism as opposed to the more constructionist approach
undertaken by the academic team. This is not surprising as the
media requires compelling headlines to increase audience size,
rather than a more measured (but probably more radical)
sociological reading of sexual practices and desires. During the
three weeks of the survey, over 44000 questionnaires were
submitted, of which 29000 were completed and subsequently analysed.
This paper will briefly describe the Kolle project, the process
of planning and some initial findings. However, the central
discussion will concern the production of sexological
knowledge(s) at the interface of two sometimes competing
discourses of the media and social sciences. The tensions in the
process of designing and analysing data from the project will be
addressed and the paper will include consideration of the role
of Kinsey, Foucault and the production of 'truths' of sexuality
and conclude with observations on the media reproductions and
articulations of sexual diversity.
