I think you're right ; old manuscripts used all the parchment leaves,
including the holes (even without worms...). In my mind, such a sentence
could refer to a vain quest, forgeing some wisdom from holes. Maybe my
understanding of your sentence comes from my perplexity reading
Dragonnetti's La vie de la lettre au Moyen âge...
