Janet's hit the nail on the head here - 'you wouldnt always want to
publicise the current location of an object...'
But that's one of my points - it could be that by considering *all* the
possible uses for geo-tagging when scoping the needs of the whole museum,
you then future-proof the scheme. If current location is considered as a
tag, you could open up possibilities for an object loan tracking system, or
a collection admin system that can trace duplication of objects in certain
departments, cities or regions.
Janet's other suggested possibilities - to me - point up the fascinating
variety of opportunities that curating the meaning of tags brings; there's
also synonym, other languages, and much more. When considering curating
meaning in the digital context, it's not just about the needs of now, it's
about the needs of the future, mixed with audience and institutional
functions.

You wouldn't always want to publicise the current location of an object eg
in store, in transit, being conserved...
The problem is that there is often a lot of geographical information about
objects. A painting could have been painted in place a, by an artist from
place b whose style reflects place c where he trained, & the painting could
be made from materials from at least 12 other places - & the person who
commissioned the work lived in place p, and then moved to place q...
You get the picture? [sorry just had to]
Think carefully and suggest the terms that you would use to define the
geo-tag.
Ah, semantics! Controlled vocabulary... :-)
