Hello all,
Do any of you have any information on this initiative? The text that
follows is from the MLA. I'm probably missing the point of it!
With thanks,
Pat

400 libraries took part in Silver Surfer Day in 2009
Digital Unite have contacted MLA with an offer to develop a specific
library strand to silver surfer day 2010.
They could develop a bespoke online resource for libraries to make
participation in silver surfer day (21 May 2010) painless.
We have discussed what theme might be a good hook to attract older people
to take part in a silver surfer library event and think local history
could be popular.
Down Your Way (title to be agreed)
Friday 21 May 2010
Library users invited to contribute to building a picture of their local
area (city, town, village, street?) during Silvers Surfers Day using
recollections, adding links to maps, using old photographs to create a
mosaic of your local area ? famous/ infamous sons and daughters, old
shops, traditions and so on.
Digital Unite would build the project shell ? using a web platform (yet to
be explored) possibly a ning site. They would explore hosting issues and
test in April with a number of volunteer library authorities.
Libraries who wished to participate would use the supplied and tested
template to set up their own Down Your Way page.
Digital Unite would also create resources that libraries could use to
attract participants and are in touch with the BBC to see if they could
support with any resources from ?Who do You Think You Are?
What libraries would need to do
· Set up Down Your Way page on PCs in all participating libraries
· Library staff on hand to support people with basic digital
literacy skills to use the web to find photos, sites and other local
resources to link up to (local history resources/ museums/ record
offices..)
· Potential link to local museums and archives
· Role for local history librarians, where available
Before they develop this idea any further Digital Unite have asked me to:
1. Find out the level of interest from library authorities in taking
part in Silver Surfers Day 2010
2. Your views on whether a local history theme a good idea ? title
could change if too dated
3. Contacts for any Library Authorities who would be prepared to test
the resource as it is developed in the next month.
