I agree with Jon on this - it would be insane to think think that the only
lessons to be learnt are within the sector!

Hi Graham
There's lots of people in the MCG with wider IT experience and I always
enjoy reading other professional perspectives on the list.
And, there's lots going on in museum and gallery IT; but I sometimes wonder
if we ought to look outwards more towards the sorts of solutions that the
commercial sector deploy in answer to some pretty similar challenges to
those tackled in museums.
For example, could the way the retail sector uses epos systems, RFiD chips,
online inventories, online ordering, stock control etc, be explored to
enrich the way museums and galleries manage collections and digital
materials?
Are there parallels between the way property websites aggregate and share
location and house data and the way museums and heritage sites would like to
share and combine data? [Well, clearly yes, I think]
It'd be great to have a session at an MCG seminar about how other IT sectors
deploy stuff that might be used in museums and galleries.
All the best
Jon

I've just joined MCG, and find the whole thing fascinating. I'm going to
havea good look through the archives. I had no idea computer professionals
in our industry conversed like this.
It seems like you are all from the museum side of the industry, whereas I am
from the commercial side, although we delve slightly into the educational.
Anyone else here from my side of things?
