prints and drawings storage/RFID tags?
Hello all,
Not sure if this is strictly speaking a computer question but it becomes
more techie as it goes along!
We are in the process of selecting prints and drawings storage for the
refurbished Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and the Kardex Shuttle or
something very similar (it's a great big metal tower with trays on which
you can store things in boxes, and the machinery delivers the one you want
to an opening) is the preferred solution as it would enable us to store a
lot of solander boxes in quite a small space. It's more often used for
various forms of stock retrieval in warehouses etc but I am now wondering
if anything like this is in use in a museum or gallery and if so, could we
visit and/or ask some questions about the logistics of it, particularly
with reference to maintaining location records on Mimsy.
A supplementary question is whether anyone in this group has experience of
RFID tags. It would be beyond our wildest dreams if someone knew of a
museum where they are in use along with the storage tower thing described
above, but I thought I would ask anyway! At the moment we are just
exploring ways of making location tracking more foolproof, since we feel
that this is a good opportunity to do so. We would probably be looking at
RFID tags on the boxes rather than attached to individual items.
Thanks in advance for any information.
best wishes,
Sheila
(ps have crossposted to Mimsy list - apologies for duplication)
