Connecting museums, libraries, and archives to new communities
Date: Friday 5th March 2010
Time: 09:45 - 16:45
Venue: MLA London, 4th Floor, 53-56 Great Sutton Street, London EC1V 0DG
The demographic profile of communities across the UK is changing faster than ever before. Every region of Britain has experienced significant migratory change. Patterns of migration are also very different from previous waves of migration to Britain, particularly with the enlargement of the European Union (EU). "Museums, libraries and archives are ideally placed to support new communities and to meet many of their needs. [These organisations] act as hubs of information, where people can come to find out about local services and opportunities to get involved in their local community." Museums, Libraries and Archives Council
How is your organisation responding to the needs of a changing community and what more do you need to do? This one-day course will support museum, library, and archive practitioners to develop the potential of their organisation and reach new audiences. The course will include:
· Background information on new communities in the UK, including refugees, asylum seekers and migrants from the new EU accession states
· Migration and settlement patterns
· The role of museums, libraries, and archives in supporting the diverse needs of new arrivals and their integration into local communities
· Ways that organisations can successfully engage with new communities and build partnerships with other providers
· Opportunities to consider local issues
· Opportunities to share successful practice
The course will assist museums, libraries, archives, and local authorities to respond to wider policy agendas, including:
· Community cohesion
· Anti-discrimination & equalities (including Equality Impact Assessments)
· Community empowerment
· Integration and citizenship
Trainer: John Vincent, The Network; and Bill Bolloten, education consultant
Price: £115 (+VAT) per delegate; cost includes all course papers, refreshments, and lunch.
