There's an application called DimSum, available at:
http://www.mandarintools.com/dimsum.html
As it is written in Java, it works on Windows and Mac. It allows you to type in the pinyin,
followed by 1, 2, 3 or 4 and then adds the appropriate tone for you. This can then be copied
and pasted into your usual word processor as usual.
I hope this is what you meant.
Regards
Dan
