You ask a very complex question and you should be prepared for a wide
variety of responses.
We have experienced several "tipping points" which have seen an
increase in the usage of the VLE and these have been accompanied by
the introduction of an appropriate service. For example, the Turnitin
plagiarism detection tool saw many new departments and lecturers
showing an interest in the VLE - here was a tool that wa sgoing to
save time and effort. As blogs and wikis became fashionable these to
have been introduced to the VLE.
This may seem a simple question but do you know what your audience
wants? What is missing from the VLE that they need. There has to be
some time invested in using a VLE effectively otherwise it will become
a resource dumping ground. Look at your training, what are you
offering to support the academic.
How do you publish successes with your VLE? Case studies are always
good to get new ideas out there and to engage with others. Publish
success stories - we have a member of staff that has only set 1 resit
exam in three years because of effective use of the VLE.
Try to address the "what is in it for me" question.
Good luck.
