The 2nd New Professionals Conference is organised by the Career Development
Group of CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information
Professionals in partnership with the Information School, University of
Sheffield. The Conference is open to all, but is especially relevant to
those who have joined the library and information profession either by work
or study, within the last five years.

Sessions will be presentation-based, with opportunity for delegates to share
experiences and ask questions, and to vote for the best paper. The winner

Parallel workshops:
Workshop A: "The Importance of an Online Presence: Entering the World of
Blogs and Blogging": As the library job market becomes increasingly
competitive, potential employers are increasingly looking into Information
Professionals' online activities as part of the recruitment process. This
workshop aims to give you all the information you need to start a
professional blog, along with advice on how to get the most out of others in
the biblioblogosphere. Facilitator: Ned Potter, LIFE-SHARE Project, Leeds
University Library
Workshop B: "Getting that Job: Effective CVs": An interactive workshop
focused on providing hints, tips and strategies on CV writing that will
enable you to make your next application with new confidence. This vibrant,
exciting and extremely useful workshop will also involve peer review of CVs
which we encourage you to bring along. Facilitator: Lizzie Russell,
Consultant, Sue Hill Recruitment
Workshop C: "Taking the Twit out of Twitter: What's in it for Me as an
Information Professional?" : There is an especially active and growing
information professional Twitter community. This workshop will be
practical, hands-on introduction that will help you to learn more about how
information professionals use Twitter, and how you can get the most out of
it. You will also be guided through setting up a Twitter account, and
introduced to the basics of Twitter, and some of the tools available.
Facilitator: Bethan Ruddock, Content Development Officer, Library and
Archival Services, Mimas
Workshop D: "Giving your Employability a Lift": An interactive and highly
motivational session which will outline how to create a brief elevator
speech introducing yourself and your expertise, for you to use in
networking, job hunting and service promotion. Facilitators: Lucy Marris,
Link Officer between the Information School and the Careers Service,
University of Sheffield, and Andrew Cox, Lecturer, Information School,
University of Sheffield
Workshops A and B will take place in parallel with session 1: "Developing
Your Skills on a Shoestring" (11.30 - 12.45 ); Workshops C and D will take
place in parallel with "Attitudes that Add Value" (13.45 - 15.00). Due to
their interactive nature, capacity is strictly limited to 10 delegates per
workshop, to be allocated on a first come first served basis. If you would
like to take part in one, please book early to avoid disappointment,
indicating your first and second choice on your booking form.

* Improved understanding of issues relevant to New Library &
Information Professionals, including:
* Good understanding of the need for New Professionals to develop and
model relevant skills in the changing world of libraries and information
* Understanding of the skills and attitudes required to
demonstrate professionalism and stand out from the crowd in economically
challenging circumstances
* Awareness of what are the current issues specially relevant to
New Professionals and improved confidence to tackle them
* Clear understanding of marketing techniques specially relevant
to New Professionals
