OK,
I wondered if that was why you'd picked CAS. Although you might want it if you have used it elsewhere it isn't necessary, you can just configure ldap authentication in handler.xml and then put the ldap details in login.config. I think you'll then find it easier to do what you need as described in the document Rod mentioned.
