FMR special supplement: HIV/AIDS, security and conflict - Due out
October 2010
Current approaches to conflict, humanitarian crisis and post-conflict
reconstruction pay scant attention to the impacts of HIV and AIDS. The
recently published findings of the AIDS, Security & Conflict Initiative
(ASCI) of the Social Science Research Council, highlight five important
messages:
1. HIV and AIDS pose diverse threats to human security and to
international and national security.
2. Pat¬terns of HIV risk are influenced by situations of insecurity and
crisis, including by the presence of security institutions.
3. Post-conflict transitions reshape and in some cases exacerbate HIV
risks and impacts.
4. HIV prevention and AIDS care and treatment are poorly integrated with
security sector reforms, humanitarian assistance, peacekeeping and
post-conflict peacebuilding.
5. Sexual and gender-based violence is a physiological and social factor
in risk of HIV acquisition and transmission.
In a special FMR supplement, to published in English and French in
October 2010, we will present some of the findings of the AIDS, Security
& Conflict Initiative, focusing on aspects that relate most closely to
forced migrants and returnees in conflict and post-conflict situations.
A number of articles will be extracted from the ASCI research reports
as listed at http://asci.researchhub.ssrc.org/working-papers
In addition we welcome offers of additional, policy-oriented articles
that look at the following areas:
* Latin America
* CEE/CIS
* India
* China
* Natural disasters
* Rural-urban migration
* Access to health services
