PhD position
Marie Curie Initial Training Network Language, Cognition, and Gender
Department of Psychology, NTNU
Trondheim Norway
The Marie Curie Initial Training Network on Language, Cognition, and Gender
(ITN LCG) is studying the interplay of language, cognition, and gender, from
cross-language and cross-cultural perspective. The ITN LCG is funded by the
European Commission, and includes 15 Doctoral and 3 Postdoctoral projects at
universities around Europe.
The PhD project will study the development of auditory and visual sensory
(AV) cues for gender and their influence in speech perception. The research
builds on demonstrated developmental patterns in the use of AV cues, and
research showing that a speakerīs gender influences infant and adult
perception of auditory and visual cues used in speech perception. The
project has two core aims: To evaluate the extent to which male and female
AV speech attributes influence speech perception and document their pattern
of development. Children and adults will be tested with AV speech
materials. The project will involve developing relevant audiovisual test
materials as well as behavioral and EEG test procedures suitable for
children and adults. The study may also evaluate training using AV speech
materials. Prior experience with EEG methods and analyses will be essential
for the study. Experience testing children and adults, alternatively, a
demonstrated strength with experimental methods, will be important. A
background with eye-tracking and developing audiovisual materials will be
considered a advantage. The project will contribute to identifying the
sensory and perceptual foundation for gender cues in speech perception and
language use.
Starting Date: As soon as possible, May 2010 at the latest.
The network is strongly based on exchange and will provide its fellows with
network-wide training activities (4 workshops, 3 summer schools, 1
scientific symposium) and training in collaborative contexts (working
visits and secondments).
Candidates can be nationals of any country other than Norway. Candidates
must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies,
etc) in Norway for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to
their recruitment. Candidates must be in the first five years (or full-time
equivalent) of their careers in research
