CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS
Geographie(s) of education in European border regions: the making and
breaking of (b)orders?
5th – 7th May 2010 in Flensburg (Germany)
The creation of a unified European space of education has been for several
years one of the main aims of the EU. ‘Bologna’ and related processes of
harmonization that can be observed at different scales of the national
systems of education aim at pushing forward the joint project of implementing
a European educational framework. So far, this project is guided by the nation
states, respectively by the responsibility of the federal ‘Länder’ in the German
context. Moreover, we can observe a practice of bordering on the local level
through administration and politics, such as the creation of school districts.
Within the EU border regions we can identify an actual process of cutting
down borders and an integration of functional unities. Looking at both, the
historical development and the existing language barriers, the systems of
education have difficulties in putting into practice the process of integration.
On the one hand, we can observe the creation of cooperative study programs,
European schools or joint school projects, which are coming up in several
border regions. On the level of territorial administration, on the other hand,
practices of bordering appear to be a major driving force working against the
implementation of cross border educational regions.
Exploring questions of ‚Education – making or breaking (b)orders?‘ this
conference will have a focus on European border regions and in particular on
changing educational landscapes that can be currently observed in the EU
border spaces. First, we want to look at the institutional change that can be
observed at different levels of the educational systems (universities and
different types of schools). Second, we want to look at the spatial mobility of
students and teachers.
With our Call for Papers we would like to ask for contributions that explore the
making and breaking of educational borders within different European contexts.
Please send us no later than 22nd March 2010 an English, French or German
summary (approximately 500 words) of your suggested paper. Our conference
will allow academics from several disciplines and different European countries
to meet and discuss. We would like to enhance a cross border exchange of
ideas and experiences and to lay the ground for future research cooperation in
the European context. The conference papers will be supplemented by
discussions with invited experts and an organized visit of educational
institutions in the Danish-German border region.
