In 2008 the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) awarded a grant to CORECOG (Community of Congolese Refugees in Britain, Newham, London) in partnership with CRONEM (Centre for Research on Nationalism, Ethnicity and Multiculturalism, Roehampton and Surrey Universities) to undertake a one-year oral history and capacity building project among the British Congolese community.
The main aims of this innovative project were to:
• explore the history and socio-political context of the Congolese migration to the UK
• document the socio-cultural heritage of the Congolese communities in the UK
• encourage young Congolese people to take part in research and oral history training and activities
Themes covered by the book:
• The cultural diversity and colonial/postcolonial history of the DR Congo
• The experience of refugees and migrants
• Congolese music, literature and arts in the diaspora
• Community life and politics in London and elsewhere in the diaspora
• The role of women and young people
• The production of Congolese and African identities in multicultural Britain
