The Linnean Society Archive
Wednesday 17th March 2010
The Linnean Society of London is the world’s oldest active biological society.
Founded in 1788, the Society takes its name from the Swedish naturalist Carl
Linnaeus (1707–1778) whose botanical, zoological and library collections have
been in its keeping since 1829. As it moves into its third century the Society
continues to play a central role in the documentation of the world’s flora and
fauna recognising the continuing importance of such work to biodiversity
conservation.
The Linnean Society has rich collections of manuscripts and archives. The
bound domestic archives includes ledgers, minute books of the meetings of
Fellows, Council and Committees, library accession and donation registers,
loan and attendance books, records of the sale and transfer of specimens and
collections, records of receipt of papers for publication and records of the
despatch of journals to members /institutions.
Recent acquisitions include important collections of wildlife conservation
manuscripts, including the papers of the British Coelenterata Society and
papers from several Fellows who were closely involved with the founding of
the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the World Wide Fund
for Nature.
