Five ESRC Studentships for Quantitative Training and Research in the Social Sciences
POSTGRADUATE STATISTICS CENTRE, Lancaster University
The closing date for completed applications is 26 March, 2010.
Applications are invited for 4-year (1 year MRes and 3 year PhD) ESRC studentships in Applied Social Statistics, available from October 2010.
These are aimed at students with a social or health science background who wish to learn and apply modern statistical methods; or for students who have a mathematical background, and wish to do statistical research with applications in the social and health sciences. A minimum of an upper second class honours degree is required.
The MRes course does not require a high level of mathematics but has a practical emphasis, with students gaining extensive experience in statistical computing. Assessment is mostly by coursework and an in-depth project. Please see http://www.maths.lancs.ac.uk/department/postgraduate/applied.
The balance between the statistics and substantive components of the PhD research is tailored to the individual student's interests and background.
The duration of the studentship could be either four years or three years depending on whether the student needs to have one year of (ESRC recognised) Masters training before starting a PhD.
Full studentships (tuition and maintenance) are only available for students who satisfy the ESRC's UK residency criteria, whereas for non-UK but EU citizens the studentship pays tuition only. The PhD studentships come with an enhanced stipend of £3,000 above the usual research council award providing the PhD is in a quantitative area.
