Job Description
The post is in the Epidemiology Unit within the Health and Safety Executive’s
Chief Scientific Adviser’s Group. It works alongside an Analytical Services
Division which includes the Statistics Branch. Together, Epidemiology Unit and
Statistics Branch employ approximately 20 statisticians and 15 support staff.
Epidemiology Unit and Statistics Branch are part of the Government Statistical
Service the governance of which is overseen by the independent UK Statistics
Authority.
The focus of this particular job in Epidemiology Unit is on the epidemiology of
work-related illness (and injury), but the post also includes responsibility for
statistics on work-related illness. Working with a medical epidemiologist, and 5
other statisticians (2 others at this grade and three Assistant Statisticians)
with the additional support of HSE's Senior Statistician, the post-holder will
have an important role in ensuring that HSE is able to make best use of
epidemiological and statistical information in achieving its aims, and will also
have an opportunity to build on existing statistical and other skills in
conducting epidemiological research
Epidemiological and statistical information play a key role in developing and
monitoring HSE's long term strategy for reducing the risks associated with
workplace hazards and are frequently relevant to the reactive work that HSE
does, meaning that the post-holder will interact with a wide range of HSE staff
and external stakeholders.
Working to the medical epidemiologist (who is also Chief Medical Adviser of
HSE), and with the shared support of the Assistant Statisticians key
responsibilities of this post are to:
- advise HSE and others on epidemiological and statistical aspects of work-
related illness (and injury), in particular the risks of cancer arising from
workplace exposures, and risks associated with pesticides;
- represent HSE in national and international technical fora in which the
epidemiological and statistical evidence for workplace risks are discussed and
debated, and develop and maintain a network of academic and other relevant
contacts;
- assist with commissioning and management of programmes of epidemiological
and statistical research into workplace risks of illness (and injury);
- maintain and develop expertise in the practical application of epidemiological
and statistical methods to HSE's work on preventing work related illness (and
injury) by means of on the job experience and formal continuing professional
development; and,
- monitor the epidemiological and statistical literature for relevant
developments.
The post-holder will have an opportunity to contribute more generally to the
development of Chief Scientific Adviser’s Group support for HSE's work.
