THE INSTITUTE OF CANCER RESEARCH
University of London; Sutton campus; Section of Cancer Genetics
The Institute of Cancer Research is at the forefront of international cancer
research and, with the Royal Marsden NHS Trust, forms the largest
comprehensive cancer centre in Europe. The Genetic Susceptibility Team, led
by Professor Nazneen Rahman, in the Section of Cancer Genetics is looking to
appoint an experienced Statistician / Bioinformatician to work on genetic
susceptibility to cancer. We have had considerable success in this field in
the identification and characterisation of genes that predispose to cancer.
Application of new technologies to disease gene identification, such as
next-generation sequencing, underpins our research strategy and we have
large and varied datasets already available and new experiments in process.
In addition to disease gene discovery we also specialise in the collection
of large series of familial samples and are interested in developing
classical family-based statistical analyses for use with data from evolving
molecular technologies.
We also have close collaborative links with Wellcome Trust Case Control
Consortium and the Section of Cancer Epidemiology in Cambridge and the
postholder would have an opportunity to join and/or lead those interactions.
We require an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to join our Genetic
Susceptibility Group. The successful candidate will contribute to ongoing
studies as well as to the design and analysis of new projects. The post
holder would be expected to become fully integrated into the team at a
fairly senior level, depending on experience.
Applicants should have a higher degree (MSc or PhD) in biostatistics,
epidemiology, genetics, statistics, or a related field, track record of
statistical genetics research; enthusiasm for disease related research and
strong computational, written and verbal skills.
Starting salary will be in the range £30,859 p.a. inclusive to £35,518 p.a.
inclusive and the contract will be offered for 2 years in the first
instance. We are happy to consider applicants that wish to work part-time.
Informal enquiries are welcome and can be made to Prof Nazneen Rahman (tel:
