Opportunities at the Office for National Statistics
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is the Government department responsible for collecting and publishing official statistics about the UK’s society and economy. We undertake and analyse a wide range of very important household and business surveys, including the ten-yearly Census. We produce key statistics on unemployment, prices, GDP, population, migration, mortality and health.
Our work is vital to the government, local and health authorities, industry, researchers, students and the public. We inform decision making at all levels with statistics that are official and independent. With the creation of the UK Statistics Authority by the Government in April 2008, to which ONS now reports, we have entered an exciting new era.
We currently have a number of opportunities for mathematicians and statisticians at our Newport (S Wales) and Titchfield (Hants) sites. Our posts are very varied, for example: developing new survey designs, solving complex estimation problems, measuring inflation, statistical modelling, optimisation, time series analysis and small area estimation.
We are interested to hear from people with a strong mathematics or statistics background who would enjoy applying their knowledge and abilities to problems of national importance.. You might be graduating in 2010, or you could be a Masters or PhD student. You might want full-time work or might want to do part-time work at the same time as completing a dissertation. Or you might already be working and wish to develop your career.
If you are eligible to work in the UK, go to www.onsjobs.co.uk for more information and to apply online. Alternatively, feel free to contact Martin Brand at ONS on 01633 455745 for an informal chat (or email [log in to unmask]).
