A workshop on
Datasets on the web: a resource for teaching Statistics?
Prof. Antony Unwin
The University of Augsburg
Department of Statistics, The University of Glasgow
Boyd Orr Building, Room 406
2pm - 4.30pm, 25th March, 2010
Nowadays many datasets are freely available on the web. Central
Statistics Offices and public bodies make their data available,
some commercial sites publish data, blogs and other independent
sites also offer data and allow users to contribute datasets to
the public arena. These are potentially valuable resources for
teaching statistics. How can they be best used in teaching and
should statisticians be more involved in advising how they are
used on the web?
The workshop will begin with a talk by Prof. Unwin with a wide
variety of examples of web-based data and the issues involved
in their use. There will be a strong element of discussion.
You are invited to bring your own examples of interesting data
sources. The workshop will be held in a lab setting, with
internet access.
The event is open to all, but participants are asked to inform
Adrian Bowman (details below) if they plan to attend, to assist
planning of the discussion sessions.
