Depends how you define 'disaster'. The Britannia Mine was a gold
working in the 1850s which produced no gold so, for the shareholders
it was something of a disaster - and most, if no all, the mercury
used in the Berdan amalgamation machines was lost into the water
courses which in itself would have been an environmental disaster.
