David,
The proceedings of the seminars will not be published immediately but
they will contribute to the work of the Research Framework which will
appear on the Web over the next two years - www.namho.org go to
'Research'. At the end of the initial two years of the project the
results will be publish as a Resource Assessment and Research Agenda
for the Archaeology of the Extractive Industries.
We are currently in the early stages of the project, collecting data
on the current knowledge for mining and quarrying archaeology -
initially drawing on over 80 Historic Environment Record (HER) and
Urban Archaeological Databases for the various local authorities
across England. The work is taking longer than expected but we are
gradually posting summaries for each local authority area to the
NAMHO website (above). We know there are significant gaps in the
data available from those sources and we are asking anyone with an
interest in the archaeology to supplement the data presented. Any
archaeological investigation published or unpublished is of value to
the project in building up a picture of current knowledge. There will
be data, the results of investigations which were never published,
which is vital to our understanding and we need to know about it to
provide a balanced assessment before moving on to the essential task
of developing an agenda for future research.
Our project officer Phil Newman <[log in to unmask]> and I
would welcome informed contributions from all sectors of the mining
and quarrying community.
