Hi Sarah
Edinburgh Napier are also looking into this prior to opening a new library which is split unto several floors so we would be interested in any ideas.
Currently, at our Merchiston campus, we empty the book return bins and check everything in to pick up holds / items for other sites etc - although the error rate is low, we have found the re-check to be more efficient than having to trawl the shelves later. The items are then sorted into DDC order and by material type, straight onto trolleys for shelving, although the stock is spread over several floors / areas we don't split them up.
We have a 24 hour standard but generally everything is on the shelf within 12 hours if returned at the home site. Most of our shelving is done by student shelvers and we expect them to clear a trolley in about 45 mins.
