oops, sorry you're right, I read it toooo quickly yesterday and interpreted
it as a command substitution not solely as a variable assignment, which it
is.
mktemp may still be a better idea then $RANDOM as the latter doesn't seem to
give that many digits in the random number where as you can get as many as
you like from mktemp
