About the Seminar
This presentation will highlight the important policy and technical area of rural transport in Africa. It will explore the importance of access to rural communities in Africa and will discuss the impact that failures in access have on communities and livelihoods in terms of poverty levels, education attainment and quality of health. It will then explore some of the policy and technical challenges and research needs to improving access for rural African communities and highlight a knowledge programme that is seeking to address some of these issues.
About the Speaker
Jeff Turner is Programme Manager for the Africa Community Access Programme (AFCAP). This is a DfID-funded initiative that funds a portfolio of research, training and knowledge exchange to support the efforts of African governments improve rural access. Jeff has over 20 years experience of transport research in developing countries, particularly Africa. He was trained as an economist and is a specialist on the interaction between transport and other development agendas such as gender equality and poverty reduction. Jeff has worked at the UK's Transport Research Laboratory (TRL), as an academic at the University of Manchester and as an independent consultant. He has published widely and has worked on projects funded by the EC, the World Bank, DfID amongst others.
The Cassie Building is building number 14 on the Campus Map (http://www.ncl.ac.uk/travel/maps/printable/Campus-Map-Print.pdf) and is about a 5-10 minute walk from Haymarket bus station, Haymarket or Jesmond metro stations, both of which are easily accessible from Newcastle Central station or Newcastle International Airport. The TORG seminars are intended to disseminate ongoing research and encourage detailed discussions of a diverse range of transport topics in an informal environment. The seminars are part of a wider programme within the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences (http://www.ceg.ncl.ac.uk/seminars/index.htm) all of which are free of charge and open for external guests to attend.
