About the Seminar
Highway Engineers are trained to design and execute work on the road so that the road is safe and so that makes it easy for the road user to pass the location safely. Unfortunately we do not always do this. The seminar called "How not to do it", discusses a number of cases where better design or execution would have given us a safer road.
About the Speaker
Yngve Granne is currently a part time consultant with Jacobs Engineering. Yngve received his BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, and his other qualifications include Siv.Ing. (Chartered Engineer), Norway.
He is a Chartered Engineer with more than 40 years professional experience in local government and consultancy, dealing with accident data systems, accident analysis, traffic management and road safety issues in the UK and overseas. He has experience as a road safety adviser in the United Kingdom and several countries overseas, particularly in the developing world. He has expertise in establishing and strengthening organisational structures (e.g. National Safety Councils, Road Safety Engineering Units, Police Traffic Enforcement Departments, Driving License and Vehicle Testing Agencies) for road safety improvements in developing countries. He also has expertise in accident analysis methods and the development of national road safety policy, road safety plans and co-ordination mechanisms to improve safety. He has lectured in road safety seminars in the UK, and a number of countries overseas.
Seminar Location
The Cassie Building is building number 14 on the Campus Map (http://www.ncl.ac.uk/travel/maps/printable/Campus-Map-Print.pdf) and is about a 5-10 minute walk from Haymarket bus station, Haymarket or Jesmond metro stations, both of which are easily accessible from Newcastle Central station or Newcastle International Airport. Car parking in and around the University campus is limited, but Park and Ride options are available from seven metro stations within Newcastle - please see the Nexus website http://www.nexus.org.uk/wps/wcm/connect/Nexus/Metro/Metro+map/) for more details.
The TORG seminars are intended to disseminate ongoing research and encourage detailed discussions of a diverse range of transport topics in an informal environment. The seminars are part of a wider programme within the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences (http://www.ceg.ncl.ac.uk/seminars/index.htm) all of which are free of charge and open for external guests to attend. Please let Miss Emma Simblett ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) know if you wish to attend a TORG seminar to allow names of external guests to be noted.
For further information on the TORG seminars, please contact Dr. Dilum Dissanayake ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) or Mr. Gareth Evans ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>).
