Mild Traumatic Brain Injury/Concussions- New Department of Defense
Guidelines
Andrew Wilner, MD, Neurology, 07:44PM Jan 22, 2010
Concussions can significantly impact mental, physical, and social
well-being. The best evidence on diagnosis and management of mild traumatic
brain injury/concussion in adults has been published
<http://www.rehab.research.va.gov/jour/09/46/6/contents.html>
by the
Veterans Administration and Department of Defense (1). The guidelines
address diagnosis and management of patients who are evaluated for symptoms
at least 7 days after the initial head injury. The well organized and
comprehensive document (112 pages) includes definitions, classifications,
charts, algorithms, and references. Algorithms address initial presentation,
management of symptoms, and follow up of persistent symptoms. A useful
structured interview for collecting head trauma event characteristics is
included in the Appendix. The authors use the terms "concussion" and "mild
traumatic brain injury" interchangeably. A Medscape article describing the
document appears here.

is devoted to the topic.
