Theorizing Worlds of Popular Music
Tuesday March 23rd, 5-7pm
Room 309, Richard Hoggart Building, Goldsmiths, University of London
Drinks reception afterwards
Worlds of popular music have been variously theorized as subcultures,
scenes, neo-tribes, club cultures and milieu. Which ever term is used to
describe them what is evident is that these worlds often offer more than an
audio/visual experience. Whether analyzing Goth, hardcore punk, metal,
hip-hop, dubstep, rave or drum and bass (amongst other) genres theorists
have often shown these groupings to be interwoven with cultural, economic,
technological, political and creative practice that illuminates the
lifestyle and identity evolution of those involved. This symposium will
explore the importance and power of these worlds and interrogate the
theoretical frameworks used to analyze them.
Free - all are welcome.
