Respondent-driven sampling (http://www.respondentdrivensampling.org),
RDS. is a sampling method that is being increasingly used to sample
‘hidden’ populations such as injection drug users, the homeless,
commercial sex workers, and men who have sex with men. RDS involves
individuals recruiting peers from their social network, and consequently
provides rich information on social networks, as well as providing means
of obtaining (in principle) unbiased estimates of quantities such the
prevalence of infectious diseases.
This project, in collaboration with Douglas Heckathorn at Cornell, the
original developer of RDS, involves the development of statistical,
computational, and mathematical models of social networks and respondent
driven sampling. These models will be applied to several datasets
collected by our collaborators from different hidden populations worldwide.
You should have a PhD in one of the following fields: statistics,
computational biology, sociology, mathematics, or epidemiology. You
should have a keen interest in social/sexual/drug-using networks. You
should also have excellent quantitative skills, be proficient in
computer programming (R, C/C++, Python), or show evidence that such
skills can be acquired quickly.
