The decision at King's College, London, to abolish the Chair of
Palaeography (currently held by David Gants, who will lose his job) is
merely one example of the short-sighted -- not to say merciless --
thinking of educational authorities in England at present. Medievalists
and many others are writing letters of protest to Professor Rick
Trainor, The Principal, King’s College, The Strand, London WC2R 2LS (and
copy to Professor Jan Palmowski, Head of the School of Arts and
Humanities). In addition to writing to Rick Trainor, those concerned
might want to join the Facebook group "Save Palaeography at King's
London":
http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/group.php?gid=303202385890&ref=nf A
letter to the people in charge is better by far, but joining the FB
group as well is a very swift way to illustrate world-wide concern. As I
write the group has drawn 1,385 members in about two days, and is
growing internationally. Germaine
