Just to add some more good news ...
Our multimedia framework has been created in 1998 (as the first multimedia
approach in a dedicated QDA tool) and the user interface has only seen minor
changes since, so there is lots of room for improvements. The
transcript-media synchronization makes an exception as it does quite well,
what it is intended to do: synchronize media and transcript and (dis)play
associated data sources in sync. Furthermore, our hybrid media engine uses
different core technologies covering the majority of available audio and
video data types.
We had the media GUI issue high on our agenda for some time and having
started now with many good ideas and the neccessary resources we will invest
quite a bit in the time to come. Investigation of available tools and
procedures in the area of QDA, video production, transcription, media data
mining, computer vision as well as user suggestions
(http://forum.atlasti.com) and our own accumulated ideas are all fed into
the development process. I am quite excited as the current design studies
already look like something very helpful for the QDA workflow.
Besides a neat interface the conceptual basics are of course also important
for utilizing video or any other kind of data in the QDA workflow. With the
primitive but powerful concept of a "quotation" (a data segment) in ATLAS.ti
the concrete content type of a data source is abstracted from when it comes
to creating and retrieving meta-data and linkages like codings, annotations
and hyperlinks. For instance, a video quotation may appear in the margin
area of a text as a link to a corresponding text passage or a link that lets
you visit an associated location using the Google Earth framework.
I browsed our tutorial sections http://www.atlasti.com/tutorials.html and
found none showing multimedia. I just created a 3 minute video showing how
to get a youtube video into ATLAS.ti and start to work:
http://downloads.atlasti.com/youtubeatlasti.mp4
This video is far from perfect (to name it kindly, Sarah forgive me!-) but
may give someone not using ATLAS.ti an idea of some basic steps at least.
Kind regards
