The Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Bristol (UK) has an opening for a three-year post-doctoral research associate in the Seismology group. This post is attached to a multidisciplinary research project to study the Earth's Core-mantle boundary region, funded by the European Research Council.
The research you will carry out will be focussed on developing the interface between geodynamical and seismic models, to build a new generation of integrated models of the deep Earth, in order to understand seismic observations. This will involve the evaluation and adaptation of petrophysical forward modelling techniques such as visco-plastic, self-consistent (VPSC) methods to lowermost mantle mineralogy, and will be done in collaboration with the members of the seismology group and the project's external partners. As well as the core project, the techniques developed and applied will contribute to other ongoing studies in the group, including understanding the dynamics of subduction and rifting processes.
We are looking for a motivated scientist with experience and a track record of computational geophysics in an academic research environment, and a PhD or equivalent in a related subject. Previous experience in the numerical modelling of material deformation, geodynamic processes and/or seismic wave propagation would be strongly advantageous, as would experience with high-performance cluster computing environments.
