Hitchins with an i would appear to be the correct spelling

Subject: Re: Hitchens family
Dear List,
I'm trying to research various members of the Hitchens family who were
active in mine managing and promotion in Devon, Cornwall and further afield,
between c.1800 and 1880.
As far as I understand it, Jehu Hitchens (born before 1800; died 1841) was
father to Josiah Hitchens (born c.1810, died after 1860), Jehu and John
Hitchens (similar dates to Josiah).
Jehu senior was clerk to the Tavistock Canal Company from 1803-1812 when he
was fired for financial irregularities, therafter he was a mine promoter and
adventurer in a wide variety of schemes in the Tavistock area of West Devon.
He was a partner in the Shillamill manganese mill shortly before his death.
Josiah was also a mine promoter, and was heavily involved with the
setting-up of the Devon Great Consols Company between 1844 and 1849,
although due to dodgy financial deals, he was forced out after that.
Jehu appears in the records of the Sark Silvermines in the Channel Islands
in the 1840s-50s, though I haven't seen him elsewhere. I understand from
Rick Stewart that John was also involved in West Devon mining schemes in the
1840s.
Has anyone done any genealogical work on the family or discussed their
financial dealings? I really need to know birth and death dates, who was
related to whom, and how. Some additional detail on what they all got up to
would also be handy.
