Dear Alastair, The cottage at Orestocks is clearly dated 1857. The census tells us that it was called Orestocks in 1861 four years later. Phil says that it was called Morwellham Cottage in 1882 and 1906. It appears then that the name "Orestocks" predates the name
"Morwellham Cottage". The tithe maps (date unknown) sent to me by John do not show any building on the site.
Why was the place first called Orestocks? Why was the name changed? Could it have been merely an enclosure where ores were dumped awaiting transport?
Still mystified, Roger.
