when does a fine become a fee?
Academic thinking suggests that fines register moral disapproval whereas fees are simply prices

"...when I returned a few (only slightly late) books the other day, the librarian didn't ask for a fine but a fee. A small change ("from the management", apparently), but more significant than it first appears. "

Barbie has a new “career” as a computer engineer. Mattel unveiled the improbably proportioned doll’s 126th career last week, saying it hoped this would “inspire a new generation of girls to hone their computer skills and join this growing profession.” Although its aspirations for Barbie are not that high. A press release says she will also show that “women can design products that have a positive impact on people’s lives... such as programming a newborn monitoring device.” Rather than, say, developing a new maternity system or rolling one out across a major acute hospital. Computer Barbie is kitted out in spangled leggings and hot pink accessories, including a hot pink computer, hot pink headset and hot pink glasses. Which is not a look sported by many women in NHS IT. Ideas please<mailto@[log in to unmask]> for the perfect outfit for computer engineer Ken.
