Dear all,
Last week on this list I asked HE libraries about how many
systems staff they have, and whether this has changed. Many thanks to
all who replied.
I had 36 replies, from 34 libraries. The maximum figure for systems
staff was 5 (1 institution) and the minimum was 0 (3 institutions). The
maximum reflects that most library systems staff are now looking after
multiple systems (eg LMS, OpenURL linker, federated search, etc), and in
this case the duties were spread across a team. Of more concern were
those libraries which reported that they had no systems staff;
presumably in these cases the systems admin is shared between other
staff, the system provider and institutional IT staff. The average per
institution worked out to 1.2. Three libraries reported increased
staffing over the past 5 years and 7 reported a decrease in the number
of systems staff.
Again, many thanks to all who helped me with this.
Ian

Dear all,
A quick straw poll aimed at Higher Education libraries only
please!
How many staff do the systems admin on your Library Management System?
Has this changed in the past 5 years? I'm thinking of people like
Systems Librarians, or any other staff who spend more than say 50% of
their time on such duties. Please reply to me and I'll summarise for the
list.
Thanks in advance,
Ian
P.S. Why am I asking this question? Not directly for work reasons - its
for some research I'm doing for an OU course.
