Dear all and with apologies for cross posting,
I enclose some information about CILIP’s response to the rejection of the
petition to the prime Minister to make the post of school librarian a
statutory responsibly. Last Wednesday the President, Biddy Fisher, signed
an Open Letter to Gordon Brown in response to the Governments response to
the e-petition on making School Libraries Statutory. This is a news item on
the CILIP home page <http://www.cilip.org.uk/pages/default.aspx>

that links to the text of the letter and other items. A media release was
issued on Monday, numerous blogs have covered it (Bob McKee, Chief
Executive, Update, Information & Advice), it features on the School
Libraries Group website and an email focusing on it has been sent to all SLG
members with an email address. See also

In addition the President also signed letters to the education spokespersons
of the three major parties (cc’d to their culture spokespersons) asking them
to commit to holding a national seminar on school libraries, including
consideration of making school libraries statutory, should they form the
next government. This was agreed with Alan Gibbons who initiated the
e-petition and started the campaign to make school libraries statutory.
Best wishes
