We have lost two leading individuals of the Art world this past 2 weeks:
one a major collector especially of Contemporary works, the other a
narrative realist famous for his plaster and epoxy resin sculptures.
The Beyeler Foundation in Riehen, nr.Basle, announced the death of its
founder Ernst Beyeler on February 26, he was 88. Ernst Beyeler began
collecting works by Picasso, Monet, Cezanne, Matisse et al soon after
the war, and with his wife Hildy eventually displayed their vast
collection in a modernistic gallery designed by Renzo PIANO. The
museum is set in a peaceful rural setting near the German border.
Raymond Mason was a British sculptor living in France and died on
February 14th in Paris. Famous for his numerous monumental public
works such as the 99 seething figures of /*The Crowd, La Foule
Illuminee*/,/* Falling Man*/ and many others, he was respected for not
only his bronze works but also those in epoxy resin.
Please note that HAA has photographed the above works, and both the
Beyeler Museum and the figures by Mason are available from Scholars
Resource.com website.
