JISC infoNet announce the release of new resources relating to Research
Information Management

Research is a fundamental activity within the UK HE sector and for many
institutions is a major revenue income stream. In common with all other
areas of endeavour, research is becoming increasingly dependant on
information systems to manage the complex information flows that it
creates. It is probable that in the medium term future there will be an
increased need for institutions to be able to demonstrate how their
research funds were utilised and the value for money they provided.

For most institutions the forthcoming implementation of the HEFCE
Research Excellence Framework is providing the impetus for making a
strategic assessment of their current provision and future requirements
when it comes to 'Research Information Management' whilst maximising
organisational efficiency and research potential continue to be key
drivers for investment in this area for many HEIs.

As part of its work supporting JISC's activity in this area JISC infoNet
has today published a new web presence aimed at providing a central
'port of call' for those interested in research information management.
This page, available at www.jiscinfonet.ac.uk/research contains links to
external sources of advice and guidance and to information on other
agendas within the JISC and JISC infoNet portfolio of potential
relevance to the research information management agenda such as
Information Management and Flexible Service Delivery. It also contains
our new Digital Repository infoKit
<http://www.jiscinfonet.ac.uk/infokits/repositories/index_html> ,
created in association with the Repository Support Project
<http://www.rsp.ac.uk/> .

The Digital Repository infoKit is a practical 'how to' guide to setting
up and running digital repositories. The kit contains information on a
broad range of topics running from the initial idea of a digital
repository and the planning process, via detailed sections on repository
set up and promotion, through to the maintenance and ongoing management
of the repository. The main focus is on institutional repositories and
the kit reflects current repository community best practice. This
resource has been written for repository administrators. It assumes no
prior knowledge of repository matters and, more importantly, assumes no
prior technical knowledge. The kit can be used by anyone who needs an
introduction to any of the topics covered.

Both these resources will continue to be added to and updated as the
outcomes from our Research Information Management support and synthesis
programme start to emerge over the coming months and as further
information on the implications of the Research Excellence Framework
become available. Likewise new additions to the Digital Repository
infoKit are already planned for later in the year, in particular to
address in more detail the use of repositories for learning and teaching
materials and to link to outputs from the HEFCE/JISC/Higher Education
Academy Open Educational Resources programme.
